My Favorite Photographs from 2014

Happy New Year!  I finally put together my favorite photographs from 2014.  It is always helpful to take the occasional assessment of our own creative progress. You might be interested in reading an essay I wrote on the subject five years ago in my On Landscape column for Outdoor Photographer on this subject.  Since I started teaching private workshop sessions in Yosemite, I’ve been visiting Yosemite Valley much more often so you will see a batch of new Yosemite images taken this past year.

I have numbered each image, which will make it easier for you to let me know which ones are your favorites.  It will be fun and helpful for me to have your feedback.  I will value a list of favs, or general thoughts on what work you respond to the most.  After I assess your feedback, I will then make a final edit of 10-15 that are my top selects of the year.  My criteria for that final selection will be based on which images I feel best represent my personal vision and style rather than the most popular ones.  If you have your own post of top images for 2014, please add your link in your comments below.

William Neill, a resident of the Yosemite National Park area since 1977, is a landscape photographer concerned with conveying the deep, spiritual beauty he sees and feels in Nature. Neill's award-winning photography has been widely published in books, magazines, calendars, posters, and his limited-edition prints have been collected and exhibited in museums and galleries nationally, including the Museum of Fine Art Boston, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, The Vernon Collection, and The Polaroid Collection.   1. I love the contemplative beauty in these images: 1, 2, 10, 28. Thank you for presenting the exquisite beauty found in nature and for sharing your new work.

  2. 38 & 35 stand out for me; they’re reminiscent of the first of your images I saw, recording those small and transient moments of nature that make the biggest impact. 30 has a magical light (but I’m missing the top of the tree – strange coming from someone who loves abstract – tho’ I suspect it wasn’t possible w/o lens flare). 29 & 26 have to be in there, and of the Polar ones, 19, 13 & 8 resonate. Gr8 stuff and a mega thank you for the inspiration it provided some years back that led me to go on and produce my own award winning photos. Here’s wishing you a superb year being in and around nature and recording it for the rest of us.

Stunning! 3- Great composition: the ice chunks in the darker area bring my eye around to search the shapes, the calm, bright blue water pulls my eye and the horizontal ice at the top keeps me in the frame; 4/5- Those “crystals” are so beautiful and interesting, would love to see these as a diptych; 16-A moody landscape with light and dark tones playing off of each other, quite how Ansel might’ve handled the subject; 20: Tone depth is great, would love to see this in person to better appreciate the shadow detail; between 24 and 28, 24’s branches keeps you knowing you’re looking at trees while 28 becomes completely abstract-both are beautifully soft; 38-Wonderful abstract composition, then the sharp leaf pulls you into reality, love it!

    Photos # 10, 15, 17, and 27 really resonated with me, though there is not a single photo in the entire batch that is anything less than outstanding. I did notice, however, that you have been shooting with ISOs much higher than I usually use (200-400). In your opinion, does the quality of the image hold up and allow you to make the kind of prints, especially in larger sizes, that you would normally make?

  8. Happy New Year! I look forward to doing this every year, because I can take my time and savour each and every image one by one. Hard to choose favourites, but here are my top ten: 2, 5, 9, 10, 15, 19, 21, 28, 20 & 32. Mine are mostly images that struck me as a bit more unusual, but some of the more ‘traditional’ landscapes and other images are just as gorgeous. I would hang all of these on my wall, and can’t wait to get your Antarctica e-book.

  11. It was another great year for you! My favs are 2,4,10,17,20,27,30,31,37,38, and then some! You make it very hard to choose. Best wishes for 2015!

  12. Amazing work! My favorites would be 15, 22(gotta plug an iPhone pic, right?), 27, 30, and 31.
    My top favorite or number 1 would be photo 27. Lots of layers, good color and a lot of atmosphere in that photograph.

      1. (Eeirtconlcs) This is a good case, and offers moderate protection to the iPod. It fits very well, looks and feels great, and the leather covered plastic shell offers pretty good protection. It comes with 2 backs to fit the older and newer versions of the 6G iPods. Mine came with a slight flaw that prohibits me from giving it 5 stars though. The plastic screen protector on mine has a smudge on it that can’t be removed. It is probably a quality control issue, and I’ve thought about exchanging it. So far, I’m living with it though. All in all, this is still a very good case.

  13. What a task to choose just a few that we consider our favourites Bill! The Antarctica series is wonderful and the penguin with 2 chicks (17) a stunner, possibly my fav. of the favourites. I also love the grass series but with so much else to choose from they had to drop out. The 3 landscapes from Antarctica go in my list (1,2,16) and the Ice Towers (10) as I’ve never seen ice towers in all the images I’ve seen of Antarctica.
    (24) Aspen as I love good movement shots and (26) because of the colour and movement in the water. (30) that Tree with Sunbeams is brilliant and (32) Cottonwoods Reflection has a peacefulness to it that I could look at all day.
    Lastly but certainly not last in my favourite images (40) the Otters, a beautiful study. I could easily pick another ten that I could live with daily.

  14. I can’t wait for your Antarctica ebook. My favorite images in that series are your more intimate texture images. 4 and 9 are absolute favorites. I also really like the contrast in #3. I think your Merced grasses series is stunning as well and am torn between #34 and #37. And I know you don’t do a lot of wildlife photography, but I really like your composition in #40.
