Thoughts about Impressions of Light:
Throughout my career, I have been seeking to inspire passion for the natural
world and convey my emotional response to the subjects I photograph -
that of awe and wonder. In 2005, when I learned a new way for me to convey
such an emotional response by the use of camera movement during exposure,
I began creating a new body of work entitled Impressions of Light. Inspired
by color photographers Ernst Haas and Freeman Patterson, and of course
the great Impressionistic painters, this work is simply another way to
depict the deeply moving beauty I see in Nature.
The most important aspect of my approach to creating these images is that
they are all single exposures created with camera motion only. Having
seen other techniques used, such as multiple exposure methods, I find
the single exposure approach works best for the mood I wish to create.
The resulting images have an organic and painterly look. Other approaches often look heavily manipulated or
Photoshopped, while my style is to paint with the actual textures, light
and color I see in front of my camera. No major post-processing manipulation
has been applied beyond basic digital darkroom techniques such as contrast
and color saturation control.
I’m simply trying to stretch creatively, not just to be different
but also to find new ways to express what I’ve been trying to show
all along—the beauty of nature. It may sound trite, but that’s
still what motivates my photographic explorations. In order to both survive
and grow as an artist, I have found it important to push myself in new
directions, in other words, to evolve. Success towards this goal cannot
be achieved passively, but it must be sought out. I have tried to adhere
to the concept that as an artist, one should always question one’s
own preconceived notions!
My goal is to remove context within a landscape, distilling down to its essence,
in order to convey the energy of a subject or scene in a fresh way, much as snow
simplifies the land.
For me, these images deflect the mind’s tendency to dwell on the concrete
issues of place and name when viewing a subject. The spirit of a place or an
object can be more strongly conveyed.
What others are saying:
"My
friend, Bill Neill...has long followed his own drummer in his work...He
strives to go deeper than a quick shot of a beautiful scene, looking for
images that connect people with nature in different ways.
...He has created a striking body of work that has a spiritual quality,
I believe, that goes beyond simple identification with a specific scene...This
is a stunning group of photos that I think can inspire anyone who loves
photography and nature. Don't expect to see the "usual" in nature
photos, though - you can expect the extraordinary. This book is about light,
color and how they play out in nature."

"William
Neill is one of the most talented landscape and nature photographers working...today.
I am a huge fan of his work..."

I am excited to announce the publication of my new book, Impressions
of Light. Due to popular demand following the release of
the Digital Edition, we have created a hardbound version! I have been
working on this series since 2005, and it is rewarding to have finally
produced a portfolio of my favorite images as a large format, hardbound
edition. The book design and images included are the same as the Digital
Edition. This book is a true coffee table collectible Edition and I will
be happy to sign it for you!
The book includes 69 images beautifully reproduced and bound on 100-pound
text silk-finish premium paper. The book dimensions are 13 x 11 inches.
I am very pleased with the quality of the reproductions. The book is available
as part of a deluxe edition package only. An original print on fine art
watercolor paper, matted and mounted on archival museum board, will also
be included with the purchase of the Impressions of Light book.
I am making nine prints available from which you can choose. You will
be able to select from one the images below. Each print will be initialed
by me. The prints will be printed on my Canon IPF 6100 on high quality
watercolor paper using highly archival Lucia pigment inks. The image size
is 6 x 9 inches mounted and overmatted to 11 x 14 inches on archival museum
board.
The book includes an essay that I've written that discusses how I came
to create this body of work and the process of creating the images. At
the back of Impressions of Light, I have included
technical information for each image in a section entitled "Photographic
Information". This section is intended to give photographers insight
regarding the techniques employed to create each image, as well as what
equipment was used.
