PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS BY WILLIAM NEILL
Process and Technique

Neill photographs with a Wista 4x5 SP metal field camera and Canon 35mm film and high resolution digital cameras. To make his fine prints, his transparencies are scanned with a state-of-the-art Heidelberg Tango drum scanner. These scans are normally done with an optical resolution of around 2500 dpi, resulting in a file size of around 300MB. He works on the digital file in Photoshop using the same controls as in any traditional color darkroom, making adjustments in color balance, contrast and density. No alternation or manipulation of the image is made, besides standard cleaning of dusts or defects. The light and color seen in the photograph were created in camera at the time of exposure.

Canon's IPF8000

Neill’s prints incorporates the latest inkjet technology: Canon’s 12-color, pigment-based image¬PROGRAF iPF5000 and iPF8000 printers, which have 17- and 44-inch carriage widths, respectively. Canon’s pigmented Lucia inks that show exceptional color, resolution and archival qualities; with custom closed-looped color management. The digital file is output onto the highest grade, photographic quality inkjet or watercolor paper, which are highly archival--nearly twice the archival durability Fuji Crystal Archive material, and four times the durability of the Ilfochrome/Cibachrome process. The result is a combination of color quality and accuracy, print longevity, resolution and cost that is unmatched by any other process.

His photographs are signed, numbered, and are mounted and over-matted on white, archival museum board. Many of his prints are available in editions limited of 150. A small group of images are available as Open Edition Prints. Open Edition prints are numbered sequentially, but not limited in quantity. Open Edition Prints are made by the same process, and to the same exacting standards as Limited Edition Prints, and also mounted and matted on archival museum board. The intention is to provide the collector with high quality prints with a lower price range

Technique, however, is not the artist’s central interest. Instead, it is to ensure that the feeling of each print is true to his deeply felt experiences exploring the wonders of Nature.
