Best Photographs of 2015

Friday, December 16th, 2016

It is that time of year again for Best of the Year photographs. Except that last year I did not post a Best of 2015. So here it is. Better late than never they say. I’ve included 40 photographs shown in chronological order, enough to give you a sense of the range of styles and subjects I explored.  No exotic adventurous travel in 2015 like my Antarctica trip in 2014.

In August, I made a switch in to the Sony A7R2 camera. I wrote an essay about the switch in my Outdoor Photographer Magazine column. Nothing revolutionary or new in my thoughts, just some excitement about the improved technology of the latest sensors.

I’d love to get your feedback in the Comments below.

NOTE:   I still am using my Canon lenses using the Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Lens Mount Mark IV Adapter. When I exported these images from Adobe Lightroom to my WordPress, the software reads the file data to show the wrong lenses, Sony instead of Canon.

Photographs by William Neill, slideshow by PhotoShelter

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

I have been preparing for a new advertising campaign targeted at art consultants, galleries, and collectors. In order to increase the impact of my William Neill Photography web site’s home page, I went to my PhotoShelter account and created the slideshow below.  Many new images are shown, as well as some of my classic nature photographs.

[photoshelter-gallery g_id=”G0000RL8VZMP_d98″ g_name=”William-Neill” width=”600″ f_fullscreen=”t” bgtrans=”t” pho_credit=”iptc” twoup=”f” f_bbar=”t” f_bbarbig=”f” fsvis=”f” f_show_caption=”t” crop=”f” f_enable_embed_btn=”t” f_htmllinks=”t” f_l=”t” f_send_to_friend_btn=”f” f_show_slidenum=”t” f_topbar=”f” f_show_watermark=”t” img_title=”casc” linkdest=”c” trans=”xfade” target=”_self” tbs=”5000″ f_link=”t” f_smooth=”f” f_mtrx=”t” f_ap=”t” f_up=”f” height=”400″ btype=”old” bcolor=”#CCCCCC” ]

William Neill: Passages of Light at The Ansel Adams Gallery

Morning Mist, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California 2013

Announcement:

I have a solo exhibit of my photographs at The Ansel Adams Gallery later this month! Many of my new images will be included, as well as some of my classic Yosemite images. It is always an honor to have my work shown there.  My photography career began there when I took the job of Staff Photographer, got to know Ansel, and it was Ansel himself that approved my photographs to be represented by his gallery in 1983.  Since that time, I probably have had 15 exhibits over those many years!

William Neill: Passages of Light

July 28th through September 14th, 2013

The opening reception is on August 1. I don’t have the timings yet, but if you think you can make it that day, I will let you know so I can tell the time of day.

Hope to see you there!

Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III__EF70-200mm f/2.8L USM__1.5 sec at f / 22__ISO 100

For the past couple of months, I have been watching this calla plant growing in my living/dining room area.  The light comes through two different windows to light the leaves to various effect.  This past Sunday, I finally saw a composition worth setting up for.  I hung up my black piece of velvet on the wall behind these leaves.  I left my camera set up and made frames when I saw interesting light. I downloaded the images, looked at the new images, and was not particularly inspired by the results.

Yesterday, four days later, I looked at the images again with Lightroom.  Then it hit me that there was real potential here, made several adjustments to this image, including converting the image to BW.  Bingo!  I polished up the file this morning in Photoshop this morning.  Here is the result!

Enjoy,  Bill

A foggy trip to the Oregon coast.

Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III__EF70-200mm f/2.8L USM__10.0 sec at f / 32__ISO 100

Last week, I traveled with my family on a camping trip to the Bandon area of the Oregon coast.  It was cold and windy, which not unusual and a refreshing break from the heat here.  If you’ve been to my Facebook page, I’ve already posted a very foggy image from the first evening there.  The next two evenings, I was on the main Bandon beach, photographing in the wind and fog.  Heaven!

For the image above, I used a Singh Ray Vari-ND to get more blurring action.  There were some subtle tones in the sky, but the monochrome evening lent itself to Black and White. John O’Conner did a wonderful job of doing the conversion and bringing out the textures in the surf and rocks that I wanted to show.

In case you missed it, here is the image from the first session.  More to come from this trip!
