Sunrise Storm Clouds, Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve, California 2010

The morning after I photographed at Conway Summit, I got up early to photograph sunrise on Mono Lake.  I have been photographing the lake since the late 1970s, and my first published photo was for the Mono Lake Committee in 1980, which has been instrumental in preserving the Mono Lake ecosystem.

As you can see, I was blessed with a colorful and dramatic sunrise.  As with the previously posted aspen photo from Conway Summit, I used two exposures in a seven stop bracket and blended them in Photoshop CS5.  In order to preserve any detail in the bright strip of sky on the horizon, I had to underexpose several stops below the meter’s reading.  That one very dark exposure was blended with a more “average” exposure, which had all the details I needed in the rest of the scene.

Aspen and approaching storm, Conway Summit, California  2010

I have been spending time today catching up with post-processing my images from last weekend.  My style leans strongly towards making detailed and intimate views of the landscape.  Giving the conditions of an approaching Sierra storm, I widened out to include trees, mountains and clouds.  I experienced amazing light here at Conway Summit, as well as at sunrise on Mono Lake

The image made here was made last Friday, with two exposures blended in PS5.  The highlights on the clouds were just too bright to record with just a “normal” exposure of the aspens.

I will be posting more new images from last weekend soon.  I can’t remember when I made so many new images that I am excited about, especially on a short 24 hour trip over to Mono Lake.  We drove over the pass on Friday morning, and had to head back again Saturday morning in order to get through Tioga Pass just as the snowstorm closed the road.

Enjoy!  Stay tuned for some new Impressions of Light images of aspen and Mono Lake!

Aspen in late afternoon light, Conway Summit, California  2010

I have been neglecting my blog lately due being too darn busy!  To see my most recent posts and images, also check here:  William Neill Photography

Here is a new image, made last Friday afternoon.  It was  simply gorgeous, with amazing clouds over the Sierra peaks freshly counted with a fall snow.

I was working against windy conditions, and the aspen were moving most the whole session.  I turned up my ISO so I could use a shutter speed to spot the leaf action.  This was the reason I took a few hundred frames here, which also included 7 frame brackets when including the very bright clouds.  Started using Nik’s HDR Effect today, which looks great so far.  I will post images soon.

Enjoy!  Bill

iPhone 3GS___1/6400 sec at f / 2.8__ISO 64

Last Monday, my kids went back to school. My 13 year old daughter started 8th grade, and I have the morning run, taking her to her new school which is 20 minutes away from my house. I will be making the drive nearly every weekday until next June. Seeing the I will be driving through beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills, and I am always looking for great light and new photographs, I might as well work on a new theme. I plan on calling the portfolio Morning Light.

For nearly five years, I drove into Yosemite Valley from El Portal to go to work at The Ansel Adams Gallery. And back down the canyon again at the end of the day. What a blessing. I remember that I had no problem getting up early to make that drive, so that I would have time to photograph if so inspired. Well, I won’t have that option on this “morning run,” since we have to leave the house by 7:30, but on my return home, I will have time to photograph.

The photograph here was made with my iPhone – three frames stitched together in Photoshop – on my drive home. This view looks east towards the Ansel Adams Wilderness and the Sierra crest. On this first day of school, I had left my 1DS Mark III behind, unfortunately. I won’t make that mistake again. However, with the extra quality from three iPhone files stitched in PS, and the wonderful Noise Reduction in Lightroom 3, the file would make a very good small print. From now on, my camera bag will be packed when I go to bed, and ready for my morning shuttle service, and my search for morning light.

Let’s see what I can come up with over the next ten months. I’ll keep you posted!
